 MEET THE 2022-2023
 PAVE CITYWIDE & WARD-BASED PLE
BOARD MEMBERS!

IT’S OFFICIAL!

We are PROUD to announce PAVE's Citywide PLE Board Members and Ward-based PLE Board Members for the 2022-2023 school year! Our 84 parent leaders will work together to amplify their vision for DC’s education system and work toward a more equitable city (which should be a state) for every community member.

WHO ARE OUR LEADERS?

PAVE's PLE Boards are intentionally made up of parent leaders from different backgrounds who bring a diversity of perspectives. Their voices represent parents who have for too long been overlooked or ignored. At PAVE these voices are amplified, and lead our vision of ensuring great schools for EVERY child in EVERY ward and community.

85% of PLE Board Members identify as Black or Brown
12% of PLE Board Members have an English Language Learner in their family
58% of PLE Board Members represent Wards 7 or 8
32% of PLE Board Members have children receiving special education services
22% of PLE Board Members have children attending DCPS schools
65% of PLE Board Members have children attending DC Public Charter Schools

'KICKING OFF' OUR #PARENTPOWER

This month, PLE Board Members gathered to kickoff a new school year of #ParentPower. At the Citywide PLE Board and Ward-based PLE Board Kickoff events, parent leaders had the opportunity to connect with new members, set leadership goals for the upcoming year, unpack the latest standardized test scores, and share their Story of Self.

PARENT LEADERS SHARE THEIR "STORY OF SELF"

During the PLE Board application process, all parent leaders - returning and new - answered the same two questions:
  • Why do you do this work?

  • For whom do you do this work?

The answers to these two questions are the foundation of a person’s “Story of Self” - one of the three pillars of Marshall Ganz’s Public Narrative model along with the “Story of Us” and “Story of Now.” These three pillars are one of the many models that we use to guide our Community Organizing work alongside the parent leaders at PAVE.

The first step in the process of building a public narrative is to share what motivates each of us to make change as individuals: our Story of Self. Because we can’t work together if we don’t know why each of us is called to do this work!

HERE'S WHAT SOME PARENTS HAD TO SAY

Why do you do this work?

"I’ve seen the overarching effects of inequality. I do this work in hope of bringing light, positivity, and innovation to people and spaces that need to be changed. I shower love, kindness and knowledge to those I share space with. I believe that through these actions, I can be a part of a collective that actively empowers people while also creating change that promotes equity." - Citywide PLE and Ward 4 PLE Board member Dominique Moore

"As a Washingtonian, I have seen and been through the changes in our city. Because of our fighting for more resources East of the River, we are making our voices heard loud and clear. We are seeing changes being made right before our eyes and it's a beautiful thing. With these changes they make a brighter future for our children. I want to continue my part in bringing changes to my community." - Citywide PLE and Ward 8 PLE Board member Sharnetta Boone-Ruffin

For whom do you do this work?

"My children and all of DC’s children. I believe that every child matters and therefore deserves equal learning opportunities. In order to make this happen, we must continue fighting for our kids to receive the needed materials that they need to grow. "                    -Ward 5 PLE Board member Meladie Tatum

"I advocate for my children to help them reach their full potential and achieve their goals. I believe advocating for my children and all DC’s children will cause a ripple effect across our education system and education institutions. Those of our system leaders and institution leaders will notice this ripple and make the necessary adjustments and changes we need to ultimately dispel the biases and myths they may have that are impacting our children." - Ward 7 PLE Board member DaSean Jones

Please join us in giving our Citywide and Ward-based PLE Board members a big (virtual) round of applause!
